Kwankwaso Warns INEC, Says Opposition Won’t Stay Silent Amid APC ‘Oppression’ Claims

Nigeria’s opposition voices are growing louder, with Rabiu Kwankwaso declaring that political leaders will not sit back while democratic institutions are allegedly undermined.

The former Kano governor made the remarks after joining a high-profile protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, where opposition figures rallied against what they described as bias within the electoral body.

The demonstration brought together key political heavyweights, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, alongside supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the platform adopted by the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Led by David Mark, the protest followed INEC’s controversial decision to suspend recognition of the faction of the party aligned with the coalition — a move that has intensified political tensions.

Kwankwaso, reacting via social media, described the protest as a united stand against what he called “blatant partisanship and compromised neutrality” by the electoral umpire. He said the gathering sent a clear message that opposition groups would resist any attempt to undermine the will of the people.

“We will not stand idly by while our electoral umpire undermines the will of the people,” he said, adding that the protest reflected growing concern over the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process.

He further warned that the opposition would continue to closely monitor INEC’s actions, insisting that the commission must return to what he described as the path of impartiality, transparency, and professionalism.

The protest underscores a widening rift between opposition parties and the electoral body, raising fresh questions about trust, fairness, and the political climate ahead of the next general election.
