US pop icon Britney Spears has reportedly checked into a rehabilitation facility following her recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence near Los Angeles, reigniting public concern over the singer’s wellbeing.
The 44-year-old was arrested in early March and booked by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department on suspicion of DUI. She was later released, with her representative describing the incident as “completely inexcusable” and saying she would take steps to comply with the law.
According to multiple US media reports on Sunday, Spears has now voluntarily entered a treatment programme. However, the exact date she began rehab has not been disclosed.
The development comes ahead of a scheduled court appearance on May 4, linked to the DUI case, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Spears rose to global fame in the late 1990s with a string of chart-topping hits, including “…Baby One More Time,” becoming one of the most recognisable figures in pop music worldwide.
In recent years, she has largely stepped back from the spotlight, though her personal life has continued to attract intense media attention and public debate.
In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears said she never used hard drugs and denied having a drinking problem, though she acknowledged using prescription medication, including Adderall.
Her struggles have been widely documented since a highly publicised breakdown in 2007, which led to a court-ordered conservatorship placed under her father, Jamie Spears. The arrangement gave him control over her finances and personal decisions while she continued performing.
The conservatorship was officially terminated in 2021 following a global “Free Britney” movement that pushed for her legal independence.
Spears’ latest rehab admission adds a new chapter to a long-running public struggle that has followed the singer for more than a decade.
