Akwa Ibom Political Shake-Up: Ex-Speaker Aniekan Uko Resigns from Governor Umo Eno’s Cabinet to Pursue National Ambition

A fresh political twist has emerged in Akwa Ibom State as Aniekan Uko, the Special Adviser to Governor Umo Eno on Legislative Affairs and former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, has stepped down from his position, signalling a possible return to frontline electoral politics.

Uko, who represented the Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency in the state legislature, confirmed his resignation in a formal letter addressed to the governor, citing plans to pursue new political opportunities aligned with his long-term ambition.

In the letter, he expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the administration, noting that evolving personal and political considerations made it necessary for him to step aside. He also hinted at continuing to support the government in other capacities despite leaving office.

The development has triggered speculation across the state’s political circles, with indications that the former lawmaker may be preparing to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027 election cycle.

His resignation comes at a politically sensitive time in Akwa Ibom, where Governor Umo Eno had earlier cautioned political appointees against abandoning their roles for elective ambitions. The governor had also reportedly assured sitting federal and state lawmakers of automatic return tickets under his political arrangement.
