Fresh turmoil has hit the Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association after its secretary, Jimoh Hassan, and several officials were suspended over what leaders described as a breach of the association’s constitution.

The Nigerian Medical Association (Lagos State branch) announced the disciplinary action following an emergency State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held on April 23, deepening an emerging leadership crisis within the body.

At the centre of the dispute is a controversial meeting reportedly held on April 18 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, which the association said was convened without proper authorisation.

Chairman of NMA Lagos, Saheed Kehinde, said the council found that Hassan and others violated key provisions of the association’s constitution and internal regulations.

“The actions of Dr Jimoh Hassan and others violated relevant provisions of NMA Lagos State Rules and Regulations, and the Constitution of the Nigerian Medical Association,” Kehinde stated.

He added that the decision to suspend the officials was unanimously reached, describing it as necessary to safeguard the credibility and structure of the association.

In a swift move to stabilise leadership, the council appointed the Deputy Secretary, Olusola Soyinka Jnr, as Acting Secretary with immediate effect.

“Consequently, the SEC resolved that the Deputy Secretary, Dr Olusola Soyinka Jnr, takes over as the Secretary of NMA Lagos in acting capacity effective immediately,” the statement said.

The association stressed that the sanctions were aimed at reinforcing discipline and accountability, warning members against actions that could weaken its institutional framework as the situation continues to unfold.
