Cult Clash in Abeokuta Turns Deadly as ‘Stone’ Shot and Macheted to Death in Ogun Violence

Violence erupted in Ogun State on Sunday after a suspected cult clash left one man, identified only as “Stone,” dead following gunshot and machete injuries in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The attack reportedly occurred around 2:45 p.m. along Wasimi Ake Road, in the stretch between Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank, before extending toward the Ijemo Agbadu axis.

Eyewitness accounts and police information suggest the confrontation broke out between rival suspected cult groups, triggering panic as gunshots rang out and individuals fled in different directions.

The deceased was alleged to be a former leader within the Buccaneer cult group, a claim authorities have not officially confirmed as investigations continue.

Spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed that detectives have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, describing it as cult-related violence.

Police say preliminary findings indicate that armed men engaged in a violent exchange, with gunfire forcing residents and passers-by to take cover as the attackers dispersed into nearby streets.

Officers from the Oke Itoku Division were deployed immediately after distress calls were received. On arrival, they discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds and machete cuts to the head.

The police clarified that the incident did not occur at Ake Palace and was not linked to any political gathering or public event in the area, countering early rumours circulating online.

Authorities confirmed that “Stone” was evacuated with the help of emergency medical services to the State Hospital, Ijaiye, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.

The police command has assured residents that an intensified manhunt is underway to track down those responsible, with officers already working on credible intelligence leads.

Security officials also urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified reports, while reaffirming their commitment to restoring order in the area.

Cult-related violence has remained a recurring security challenge in parts of southwestern Nigeria, often resulting in deadly street clashes and retaliatory attacks.
