Malawi’s U-20 women’s national team has turned to its foreign-based talents as they prepare for a decisive showdown against Nigeria’s Falconets in the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. The return leg is set for Saturday at the Bingu National Stadium, with everything still to play for after a tough first-leg defeat.

The Junior Scorchers head into the tie needing a major turnaround after losing 2–0 to Nigeria at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne last weekend. The result has put pressure on Malawi as they chase a historic first-ever qualification for the U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Head coach Maggie Chombo has strengthened her squad with the inclusion of two Europe-based players, Faith Chinzimu and Rose Kabzere. The move signals Malawi’s intent to raise their competitive edge against a physically and tactically strong Nigerian side.

Chinzimu, a 19-year-old midfielder, currently plays for Swedish champions BK Häcken FF. She was part of the squad that lifted the 2025/26 Women’s Europa League title, bringing valuable continental experience into the Malawian camp.

Kabzere also adds international pedigree, featuring for French club Montpellier. Her attacking presence is expected to provide Malawi with more creativity and threat in the final third as they search for goals against the Falconets.

Malawi’s qualification dream remains alive but difficult. They must overcome a two-goal deficit while keeping Nigeria’s well-drilled youth side from scoring, a challenge that will test both their structure and mental resilience.

Nigeria’s Falconets, meanwhile, carry a strong reputation in women’s youth football and will aim to protect their advantage and secure yet another appearance on the global stage. The tie now sets up a tense and high-stakes battle in Lilongwe.

All eyes will be on the Bingu National Stadium as Malawi look to rewrite their history, while Nigeria attempt to complete the job and continue their dominance in African women’s youth football.
