Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has emerged as the only aspirant to purchase the presidential Expression of Interest Form of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources within the party disclosed that Obi was the sole presidential aspirant as the sale of forms officially closed.

The development comes weeks after Obi defected from the African Democratic Congress to the NDC, a move widely seen as part of efforts to reposition ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

Confirming the development, the National Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, announced that while the sale of presidential forms had ended, the deadline for other categories of elective offices had been extended.

According to the statement, the earlier deadline fixed for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, was extended to midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026, for aspirants seeking tickets into State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and Governorship positions.

The party explained that screening of aspirants who had purchased and completed their forms would commence on Tuesday, May 19, and end on May 26, 2026.

It added that the collection and return of Nomination Forms for screened and cleared aspirants would begin on May 20 and close on May 26.

The NDC warned that no further extension would be granted and urged aspirants to strictly comply with the party’s guidelines and timelines.

The party also directed aspirants to appear before screening panels with relevant documents, including educational certificates, birth certificates or declarations of age, voter’s cards, membership cards, passport photographs and curriculum vitae.

According to the statement, all documents submitted to the screening committee must be provided in six copies.

The party said screening would be based on the wishes of the electorate, local peculiarities, competence, capacity and character of aspirants.

It further stated that the screening committee would also consider the party’s affirmative action policy for women, youths and persons living with disabilities.

With Obi emerging as the lone presidential aspirant, indications are growing that the former Labour Party ally could emerge as the consensus presidential candidate of the NDC for the 2027 election.
