IK Ogbonna Breaks Silence on Alex Ekubo’s Death with Emotional Tribute: “Nothing Prepares You for a Loss Like That”

More than two months after the death of Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, his close friend and colleague IK Ogbonna has shared an emotional tribute, opening up for the first time about the grief that kept him away from public conversations surrounding the tragedy.

Ogbonna, whose silence during Ekubo’s burial sparked speculation among fans, took to Instagram on Tuesday, July 15, 2026, to reflect on the painful loss, describing the late actor as not just a friend but a brother whose absence has changed his outlook on life.

“On May 11th, I lost my best friend and brother, Alexx. Nothing prepares you for a loss like that,” he wrote.

Alex Ekubo died on May 12, 2026, after spending hours on life support. His family announced that he passed away at Evercare Hospital in Lagos following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.

In the heartfelt post, Ogbonna admitted that the past two months had been marked by deep reflection as he struggled to understand death, faith and life’s uncertainties. He said the reality of losing someone close cannot truly be understood until it happens to someone you love.

“You never truly understand the weight of death until it’s your own person inside that vehicle. Until the phone stops ringing forever. Until the chair beside you remains empty. Until the conversations you thought you had time to finish suddenly become memories.”

The actor also reflected on the dreams they once shared, recalling conversations about growing old together, building businesses, making films, travelling the world and raising their families. He said neither of them ever imagined that one would leave so soon.

Despite his heartbreak, Ogbonna said he has found comfort in his faith, believing that God’s plans are beyond human understanding. He added that Ekubo’s life reminded him that true success is measured not by wealth or fame, but by the positive impact a person leaves on others.

Using the tribute to encourage others, the actor urged people to value relationships while they still have the opportunity. He encouraged fans to express love openly, forgive quickly, spend time with family and cherish every moment with friends.

Ending the emotional message, Ogbonna vowed to honour his late friend’s memory by continuing to pursue purpose and live intentionally.

“You may no longer walk beside me, but you will always walk within me. I promise to keep living, to keep building, to keep creating and to leave this world better than I met it. Until we meet again, my brother. Rest well. I love you, always.”
