Court Jails Three for Life Over Oyo Schoolchildren Kidnapping, Terrorism Links

Three men linked to the kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State have been sentenced to life imprisonment after admitting their involvement with a proscribed terrorist group.

Justice Salim Ibrahim of the Federal High Court in Abuja handed down the sentence after convicting Abdulrazak Umar, also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid, Yunusa Musa, alias Yunusa Bin Musa, and Shamsu Adamu Sani, also known as Abu Itisar.

The Department of State Services (DSS) prosecuted the trio over their alleged roles in the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, one of the incidents that sparked widespread concern over insecurity and attacks on schools.

The defendants were arraigned on a 10-count charge bordering on terrorism-related offences. During the proceedings, however, they pleaded guilty to several counts, including Counts Four and Six, which related to their involvement with members of a proscribed terrorist organisation.

The court heard that the three men admitted to being associates of the bandits responsible for carrying out the kidnapping and acknowledged concealing information about the group’s activities.

Following their guilty plea, Justice Ibrahim found them guilty and sentenced each of the convicts to life imprisonment.

The judgment marks another significant prosecution in the government’s efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and bring those connected with attacks on schools and communities to justice.

The kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area drew national attention, highlighting the growing security challenges posed by armed criminal groups targeting educational institutions across parts of the country.
