Governor Bago Moves to Expand CNG Infrastructure as Niger State Eyes Major Clean Energy Investment

Niger State is taking another step towards cleaner and more affordable energy as Governor Umaru Bago explores a major investment in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure aimed at transforming transportation and boosting economic growth.

The governor met with representatives of Hiter-Stata Energy Investment Ltd., led by the company’s Deputy Managing Director, Ezuma Okoronkwo, to discuss plans for establishing a comprehensive CNG ecosystem across the state.

The proposed investment includes the construction of CNG mother and daughter stations, vehicle conversion centres, and other supporting facilities designed to accelerate the adoption of natural gas as an alternative fuel for transportation and industry.

During the meeting, both parties also examined possible areas of partnership to ensure the successful delivery of the project and maximise its economic and social impact for residents. The initiative is expected to improve access to cleaner energy while supporting the state’s long-term infrastructure and industrial development goals.

Governor Bago described the proposal as a major milestone in Niger State’s drive towards sustainable development. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment that attracts strategic investments capable of stimulating economic growth, strengthening energy security and improving the quality of life for citizens.

Speaking on behalf of the company, Okoronkwo said the investment would speed up the transition to CNG-powered transportation, lower fuel and transportation costs, generate employment opportunities and encourage greater private sector participation in the state’s energy sector.

He added that the proposed project aligns with the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas Initiative, which seeks to promote natural gas as a cleaner and more affordable energy source while driving industrialisation and reducing dependence on conventional fuels.

If implemented, the investment would position Niger State among the leading sub-national governments embracing CNG infrastructure as Nigeria continues its transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
