Davido Faces Backlash Over Trump Remark as Nigerians Demand Broader Stand on National Issues

Afrobeats superstar Davido has come under heavy criticism on social media after saying he would seek the intervention of United States President Donald Trump if the August 15 Osun State governorship election is compromised.

The singer’s comment, made while expressing concerns about the forthcoming election, has triggered widespread debate, with many Nigerians arguing that he should be equally vocal about broader national issues affecting millions of citizens.

Davido had warned that he would involve President Trump if anything goes wrong during the Osun governorship poll. The election is particularly significant to the singer, whose uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking re-election.

Following the remark, users on X questioned why the award-winning musician appears more outspoken when political matters involve his family than when discussing nationwide concerns such as economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and governance.

One user, @Barnny_sommy, wrote: “Davido always comes over to fight when his family members are involved. For three years, he has remained quiet, while Nigerian citizens suffer, only for him to come out now disturbing us.”

Another user, @NC_Okonkwo, questioned the singer’s consistency, asking why he did not seek international attention during the 2023 presidential election. “Why didn’t you involve Biden when things went wrong with the 2023 Presidential Election?” the user wrote.

Others urged Davido to use his influence and massive youth following to speak more consistently on issues affecting ordinary Nigerians. @stevejioff described the singer as “a great guy” but said it was disappointing that he rarely comments on challenges facing young people unless the issue directly concerns his family.

Some reactions were even more critical. @Mind__Game accused Davido of remaining silent during incidents involving kidnappings and insecurity, while @Akpomamus186428 alleged the singer only became outspoken when political developments affected his personal interests.

Despite the criticism, a number of supporters backed Davido’s position. One X user, @TheRealEmma22, encouraged the singer to seek international attention ahead of the election, arguing that external scrutiny could help ensure a credible poll.

The online debate comes as political tensions continue to build ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election, with political parties, supporters and public figures increasingly weighing in on the contest.
