Atiku Alleges Private Bank Account Breach After Mysterious ‘Election Campaign’ Deposit

Fresh concerns over data privacy and financial security have emerged after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar alleged that an unknown individual transferred money into one of his private bank accounts without his knowledge or approval.

The 2027 presidential hopeful disclosed the incident in a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, describing the transaction as a possible breach of confidential banking information.

According to the statement, the payment was made into a personal account domiciled with a leading commercial bank in Nigeria. The transfer reportedly carried the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign,” even though Atiku said neither he nor his campaign team had requested, authorised or expected such a payment.

The former vice president stressed that the account in question is a strictly private account whose details are not available to the public. He questioned how an unknown person obtained access to the banking information, describing the development as alarming.

“If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” the statement read.

Atiku warned that if sensitive banking information can be accessed without consent, it could expose Nigerians to serious security risks. He suggested that individuals with privileged access to confidential financial records may have leaked the information, potentially putting account holders at risk of kidnapping, fraud, terrorism and other criminal activities.

The former Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate also linked the incident to what he described as a pattern of suspicious developments ahead of the 2027 general elections. He urged security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and determine how the account details became available to an unknown individual.

Despite the development, Atiku dismissed what he described as attempts to damage his reputation, insisting that he remains committed to offering Nigerians credible leadership and practical solutions to the country’s political and economic challenges.
