Accord Party Demands EFCC Chairman Olukoyede’s Resignation Over Osun Account Freeze Controversy

The Accord Party has demanded the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, over the controversy surrounding the freezing of Osun State Government accounts.

The party made the call on Friday while praising President Bola Tinubu for directing the anti-graft agency to reverse the action, describing the intervention as necessary to protect democratic institutions ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Accord National Chairman Chief Maxwell Mgbudem said the party had lost confidence in the EFCC leadership, accusing the commission of acting in a manner that appeared politically influenced.

Mgbudem alleged that the EFCC’s decision to freeze the state government accounts had damaged public trust in the agency and called on Olukoyede to step aside. He added that if the EFCC chairman refuses to resign, President Tinubu should remove him from office to restore confidence in the commission.

“Having demonstrated unprecedented partisanship in Osun State politics, Accord has lost confidence in the current leadership of the EFCC,” Mgbudem said.

The party also urged security agencies, anti-corruption bodies and other government institutions to maintain neutrality throughout the election period. It warned against using federal agencies to intimidate political opponents or influence electoral outcomes.

Accord further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a free, fair and credible governorship election in Osun State. The party urged civil society organisations, election observers, media organisations and opposition parties to remain alert against actions that could undermine the integrity of the poll.

The controversy began after the EFCC secured an order to freeze Osun State Government accounts, with the commission stating that the move was part of an investigation into alleged financial crimes. However, President Tinubu later directed the EFCC to return to court and withdraw the order, explaining that actions by federal institutions are often linked to the Presidency even when he has no prior knowledge of them.
