Dangote Refinery Secures $1bn Backing for Planned IPO, Eyes $5bn Africa Record

Dangote Refinery is moving closer to a major stock market debut after securing a $1 billion underwriting programme ahead of its planned initial public offering, potentially setting the stage for one of Africa’s biggest-ever IPOs.

The programme includes $600 million already raised through a private placement, while a further $400 million has been committed to support the proposed listing. The refinery has also applied for approval to raise as much as $5 billion through the offering.

The final size of the IPO will depend on regulatory approval and other market conditions. If the full amount is approved and achieved, the listing would rank among the largest public offerings ever seen on the African continent.

Funds raised through the IPO are expected to support the refinery’s expansion plans. The company wants to increase its production capacity from current levels towards 1.4 million barrels per day, strengthening its position in Nigeria’s oil refining sector.

A key feature of the proposed offering is its planned access for Nigerian retail investors. The structure is expected to give individual investors an opportunity to buy shares in the refinery if the listing receives the necessary approvals.

The proposed IPO is currently expected around October, although the timeline could change depending on regulatory processes and other factors. The move would also give Nigerian investors a direct opportunity to participate in the ownership of one of the country’s most significant industrial projects.

The development could have a wider impact on Nigeria’s capital market by attracting new investors and increasing the value and depth of the Nigerian Exchange. It would also make the refinery one of the most closely watched companies in the country’s financial market.

For Dangote Refinery, however, the bigger question is now the scale of the eventual offering. If the company secures approval for a $5 billion IPO and successfully raises that amount, its market debut could set a new benchmark for African listings.
