Rio Ferdinand: Ezri Konsa Signing Could Help Arsenal Win Premier League Title

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Arsenal’s move for Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa could strengthen their chances of reclaiming the Premier League title this season.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been looking to add defensive depth after injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. Konsa’s ability to operate at both centre-back and right-back makes him a strong fit for the Gunners’ needs.

Aston Villa had initially placed a £60 million valuation on the England international, but Arsenal have reportedly negotiated a deal worth £51 million plus add-ons. Konsa is expected to undergo his medical on Thursday after reportedly saying his goodbyes to teammates at Villa Park.

Ferdinand has praised Arsenal’s decision to pursue the 28-year-old, arguing that the reported fee represents good value in the current transfer market. He also believes Konsa’s experience means he can immediately step into Arteta’s defence when required.

“This is a remarkable signing. A player in his prime who possesses a clear understanding of his identity and capabilities,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. He described Konsa as a reliable and highly capable Premier League defender who could provide several years of quality service.

The former England defender also highlighted Konsa’s versatility, saying he can cover two important positions without requiring a lengthy adjustment period. That could prove particularly valuable while Arsenal manage their defensive injury problems.

Ferdinand went further, arguing that the potential signing reflects the kind of sensible squad-building required to challenge for the league title. “If you go and get him, that just reinforces why I think Arsenal are going to go and win the league again, because it’s a sensible and very good signing,” he said.

If completed, Konsa would become one of Arsenal’s major additions this summer, joining the likes of Christos Tzolis, Illan Meslier and Bruno Guimaraes. Piero Hincapie, who spent last season on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has also reportedly made his move to the club permanent.
