Kano Wedding Shooting: One Killed, Three Injured as Police Arrest 34-Year-Old Suspect

A wedding ceremony in Kano State turned violent after a man allegedly opened fire on guests, leaving one person dead and three others injured.

The incident occurred on August 16 at Tudun Yola, where the gathering, popularly known as a “DJ,” was taking place. The Kano State Police Command said it has arrested a 34-year-old suspect, Rabiu Mukhtar, in connection with the shooting.

Police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, said Mukhtar allegedly used a pump-action gun to shoot four people during the incident. The firearm was later recovered from the suspect.

The victims were identified as Sadiq Abubakar, Umar Rabiu, Muhammad Sadisu and Aliyu Mustapha. They were taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for medical treatment.

Haruna-Kiyawa said Mustapha later died from injuries sustained in the shooting, while the remaining three victims were responding to treatment at the hospital.

The police spokesperson said Mukhtar and another suspect were arrested and taken to the command headquarters in Bompai as detectives continued their investigation into the incident.

Preliminary findings indicated that the shooting may have been linked to a disagreement over music being played at the ceremony. Haruna-Kiyawa said the suspect told investigators that he opened fire after being informed that suspected thugs, locally known as “Yan Daba,” were heading towards the venue.

The police said investigations are ongoing and assured that those found culpable would face prosecution after the conclusion of the investigation.
