Wike Receives Fubara in Port Harcourt as Rivers Reconciliation Deepens Ahead of 2027

A fresh meeting between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has further signalled a thaw in their once bitter political relationship, with both camps stepping up efforts to consolidate their reconciliation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike received Fubara at his residence in Port Harcourt on Sunday in what marked their first known meeting since the governor announced that he would not seek re-election as Rivers State governor in 2027.

The FCT minister was accompanied by Rivers APC governorship candidate Kingsley Chinda and Magnus Abe, who chairs the Rainbow Coalition reconciliation committee. Fubara attended with former APC Deputy National Chairman Sam Jaja.

The meeting comes after months of political tension that deeply divided Rivers State and strained the relationship between Wike and his successor. The dispute escalated into a prolonged power struggle, with lawmakers loyal to Wike initiating impeachment proceedings against Fubara.

The political crisis eventually became serious enough to contribute to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State. A subsequent truce between the rival camps opened the way for a broader political reconciliation.

Wike has recently declared that the dispute with Fubara is over, saying the governor had agreed to return to the political family that backed his emergence in 2023. The development was followed by the formation of a reconciliation committee led by Abe to engage Fubara and his supporters.

Fubara has since joined the All Progressives Congress and expressed support for the Rainbow Coalition. He has also endorsed Chinda as his preferred candidate to succeed him as Rivers governor in the 2027 election, strengthening the political alignment between the two camps.

The latest meeting is therefore being viewed as another step in efforts to cement the new alliance. With the 2027 elections approaching, the reconciliation between Wike and Fubara could have significant implications for the political contest in Rivers State.
