2027: Donald Duke, Adebayo, Babangida Aliyu, Others Gather in Abuja for Opposition Summit

Nigeria’s opposition figures have converged on Abuja for a summit aimed at building a united political platform capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 presidential election.

Among those at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre are Peoples Redemption Party presidential candidate Donald Duke, Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Adewale Adebayo, and former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu.

Other prominent attendees include Allied Peoples Movement vice-presidential candidate Lawal Daura, PRP National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, SDP vice-presidential candidate Usman Bugaje, House of Representatives Minority Leader Fred Agbedi, and African Democratic Congress National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi.

The meeting was convened by G-100, a political pressure group led by former All Progressives Congress National Vice Chairman, Salihu Lukman. The organisers say the gathering is focused on finding common ground among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

Lukman, while welcoming participants, called on the parties to move beyond their individual political interests and work towards a broader national objective. He stressed that the proposed cooperation would not require the participating parties to abandon their identities.

“We are not asking any political party to dissolve. Let us agree that we must build the table before negotiating the seats,” Lukman said.

The summit comes amid growing discussions about opposition cooperation ahead of 2027, with several parties and political figures exploring possible alliances to challenge the governing party. However, significant differences over leadership, presidential tickets and political strategy could still test any attempt to form a durable coalition.
