Newborn Baby Rescued From Carton in Benue Village, Mother Unknown

A newborn baby girl has been rescued after she was allegedly abandoned inside a carton in Wuese village, Mbawar Council Ward, Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State.

The infant was reportedly found wrapped in clothes and in critical condition by a resident, Mbakasev Yisa. The identity and whereabouts of her mother remain unknown.

The councillor representing Mbawar Council Ward, Gabriel Mbaukaan, said Yisa immediately alerted the police after discovering the baby. Officers who arrived at the scene reportedly documented the incident and directed that the infant be taken to a medical facility.

The baby was initially taken to a clinic but could not be admitted because of the severity of her condition. She was later moved to Dooshima Clinic in Wuese, where she is receiving treatment and being fed glucose and NAN infant formula as medical workers try to stabilise her.

Mbaukaan said he had contributed financially towards the baby’s treatment and appealed to medical personnel to provide her with adequate care. He also called on humanitarian organisations, government agencies, community leaders and other well-meaning Nigerians to support the infant.

The councillor said the community was working to ensure the baby survives while efforts continue to establish how and why she was abandoned. He added that residents were also following up with local police as the situation develops.

However, the Benue State Police Command said it had not yet received an official report on the incident. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, said he would contact the Divisional Police Officer in Konshisha for further details.

Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged abandonment and determine who the baby’s mother is. Meanwhile, the immediate priority remains securing medical care and protection for the newborn.
