AY Reacts to Driverless Uber Experience in US, Compares Technology With ‘Juju’ in Africa

Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has sparked discussion after showcasing his experience in a driverless Uber in the United States and contrasting it with what he described as the use of “juju” in Africa.

AY shared the experience in a video showing an autonomous vehicle transporting him without a human driver. The comedian appeared surprised by the technology as the car navigated the road and took him to his destination.

“See na this car dey drive by itself. Na my own Uber be this, e don dey carry me go where I dey go,” AY said while filming the journey.

He explained that the entire process was handled through his mobile phone. According to the comedian, he used his phone to unlock the vehicle before also starting the ride digitally.

The experience prompted AY to reflect on the gap he perceives between technological development in the United States and some practices in Africa. He challenged Africans who argue against claims that Western countries are ahead in technological advancement.

“When oyinbo dey tell una say them no be una mate, una go dey follow them dey argue,” he said.

AY then criticised what he described as Africans turning to traditional spiritual practices instead of embracing technological progress, saying, “Una go dey use una own juju dey do different thing, dey kill people for Africa.”

The comedian said the driverless Uber experience came on his birthday. His comments have since drawn attention online, particularly his comparison between autonomous vehicle technology and the traditional practices he referenced.
