Two high-ranking members of a terrorist syndicate have been killed during an intelligence-led military operation in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, security sources say.
Troops of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, carried out the dawn operation on Monday, August 31, 2026, after receiving intelligence on the location of key members of the group.
Counter-terrorism expert Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a statement shared on X, saying the troops moved on the terrorists’ hideout in the early hours of Monday.
The troops reportedly engaged the group after reaching the suspected enclave and used superior firepower to overwhelm the terrorists. Two senior members of the syndicate were subsequently killed during the encounter.
The victims were identified as Hamisu, also known as Mamiyo, described as a prominent gunrunner and second-in-command to terrorist commander Kachalla Muhammadu Filani, and Umar Bocho, said to be a senior lieutenant in the group.
Makama said Filani narrowly escaped the operation but sustained severe gunshot wounds. Security agencies have since intensified efforts to locate the wounded commander and other members of the group who fled the area.
Two motorcycles belonging to the terrorists were also reportedly captured and destroyed during the operation. Troops have continued clearance and mop-up operations in the area as efforts to prevent the group from regrouping continue.
Residents and medical personnel in Matazu and surrounding communities have been urged to remain alert and report anyone seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot wounds to security agencies.
