Diomansy Kamara Accuses Clubs of Disrespecting African Players After Sarr, Camara Transfers Collapse

Diomansy Kamara has accused football clubs of treating African players as commodities after deadline-day moves for his clients Ismaïla Sarr and Lamine Camara collapsed.

Sarr, a Crystal Palace forward, had attracted strong interest from Liverpool, but Palace rejected the Premier League club’s efforts to sign him. The Senegal international ultimately remained at Selhurst Park after the transfer window closed.

Camara’s proposed move to Chelsea also fell apart in dramatic circumstances. The Monaco midfielder had been close to completing a reported £47 million transfer to Stamford Bridge, including undergoing a medical, before Monaco withdrew from the agreement at the final stage.

The two failed transfers prompted a strong response from Kamara, who represents both players. He argued that African footballers should have a greater voice in decisions that could shape their careers, rather than being left at the centre of negotiations focused primarily on transfer fees and club interests.

“We have to get out of this logic where the African player can sometimes give the feeling that he is just a commodity: you buy it, you set its price, you negotiate its future and, too often, your will seems to go into the background,” Kamara said.

“Our African players deserve respect. The respect of their work. The respect of their careers. Respecting their ambitions. The respect of their voices,” he added.

Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro, however, defended the club’s decision over Camara. He said Monaco had prioritised a potential deal involving Folarin Balogun and Everton, explaining that the late transfer negotiations ultimately left the club having to choose between the two players.

Kamara’s comments have added another dimension to an already dramatic transfer deadline day, raising wider questions about player power and the influence footballers have when clubs negotiate their futures. Both Sarr and Camara will now remain with their respective clubs after their anticipated moves to Liverpool and Chelsea failed to materialise.
