Jigawa Varsity ASUU Issues Two-Week Ultimatum, Threatens Strike From September 15

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa Branch, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Jigawa State Government to implement the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement and settle outstanding arrears or face industrial action from September 15, 2026.

The union is demanding payment of arrears accumulated from January 2026, alongside outstanding responsibility allowances, annual increments, promotion arrears, third-party deductions and the approved 2024/2025 Earned Academic Allowance.

The decision was reached during a special congress held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences Lecture Theatre 2, where members reviewed the level of implementation of the 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement.

In a statement signed by the ASUU-SLUK Chairman and Secretary, Idris Chiromawa and Salisu Yunusa, the lecturers said the congress resolved to demand full implementation of the agreement and payment of all accrued entitlements.

The union also called for Sule Lamido University to be exempted from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), arguing that the system does not adequately reflect the peculiarities of the institution.

ASUU-SLUK further demanded the remittance of outstanding third-party deductions and urged the state government to reconsider its decision to reduce the 0.7 per cent deducted from the statutory two per cent Local Government Contribution to the university. The union said annual increments dating back to 2023 and promotion arrears outstanding since 2024 were also yet to be paid.

The development comes amid similar demands by ASUU branches and university-based unions in other parts of Nigeria over the implementation of the 2025 agreement, unpaid arrears and delayed promotions.

However, Jigawa State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Yusuf Chamo, said the government had only recently received a memo from the National Universities Commission on the Federal Government agreement. He said the administration was yet to study the document and reflect the required expenditures in the state budget.

Chamo said the state government had the authority to determine funding sources for its two universities but assured that it remained open to dialogue with the union to prevent any disruption to academic activities. He also said Governor Umar Namadi’s administration remained committed to repositioning education in the state.

ASUU-SLUK, however, warned that unless the government addresses its demands within the two-week window, the union will commence industrial action on September 15.
