2027: Opposition Coalition Only Way to Defeat Tinubu, Says Atiku Campaign Spokesman

Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, has declared that a broad opposition coalition is the only realistic path to defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Okonkwo also dismissed the possibility of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), defeating Tinubu if he chooses to contest without joining forces with other opposition politicians.

Speaking during an interview with Ibeju Upgrade Media, Okonkwo argued that the opposition would need to combine its political strength rather than rely on a single candidate to challenge the incumbent.

He specifically rejected the suggestion that Obi could defeat Tinubu on his own, even if former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso were to serve as his running mate. Okonkwo maintained that Obi would face significant challenges winning support in northern Nigeria under such an arrangement.

“Coalition is the only way out,” Okonkwo said, arguing that defeating Tinubu would require a coordinated opposition strategy rather than an individual presidential bid.

The former Labour Party chieftain further claimed that Obi would struggle to secure sufficient support in Kano if he contested against Tinubu alone. He also dismissed Kwankwaso’s potential contribution to an Obi-led ticket, alleging that the former governor had lost some of his political influence even in Kano.

Okonkwo’s comments come amid renewed efforts by opposition leaders and political groups to build a coalition ahead of the 2027 general election. The proposed alliance has continued to generate debate over who should lead it and how the various political interests could be brought together.

The opposition’s coalition discussions are unfolding against the backdrop of an increasingly competitive 2027 political landscape, with Tinubu expected to seek re-election and several opposition figures positioning themselves for a possible challenge.

For the opposition, the major question remains whether competing political ambitions can be overcome to produce a unified platform capable of mounting a credible challenge to the ruling party.
