Burutu Protest: Youths Seize Council Chairman’s Boat Over Alleged Neglect, Poor Amenities

Youths in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State have reportedly seized a boat belonging to the council chairman, Julius Takeme, during a protest over alleged neglect and poor provision of basic amenities in the riverine community.

The protesters reportedly stormed local government facilities and switched off the generator supplying electricity to the area, questioning why the council chairman should have access to power while residents continued to experience prolonged electricity shortages.

Chanting, “Off that generator!”, the youths allegedly demanded improved living conditions and better access to essential services across the community.

The protest was reportedly sparked by the death of an expectant mother and her unborn child, who residents said died after allegedly failing to receive timely medical attention at the government-owned General Hospital in Burutu.

Residents have raised concerns about the condition of the hospital, citing alleged shortages of medical personnel, drugs and essential equipment, as well as inadequate electricity supply that they say has further affected healthcare delivery.

As the protest intensified, the youths reportedly dragged Takeme’s boat ashore and displayed placards demanding urgent improvements in healthcare, electricity, roads and governance.

The protesters accused the authorities of neglecting the needs of residents and called for immediate action to address the challenges affecting the riverine community.

The development has renewed concerns over the state of basic infrastructure and public services in Burutu, particularly healthcare, electricity and transportation infrastructure.
