Nollywood actress Mo Bimpe has responded to social media criticism after a short video of her interacting with actor Jide Awobona at a recent movie premiere sparked online speculation about her marriage.
The clip was recorded at the September 2, 2026 premiere of A Mama Deola Wedding Story in Lagos, where Mo Bimpe was seated between Awobona and her husband, actor Lateef Adedimeji.
In the footage, the actress was seen leaning on Awobona’s shoulder while looking at something on her phone. Some social media users began dissecting the interaction, with some suggesting that Lateef appeared uncomfortable.
The reactions triggered a wider debate online about boundaries, trust and interactions between married people and friends of the opposite sex.
Mo Bimpe addressed the criticism on her Instagram Story on Sunday, questioning why an ordinary conversation between friends had been interpreted as something inappropriate.
The actress argued that marriages are not all built around suspicion, control or constant monitoring. She said some relationships are instead founded on trust, friendship, respect and confidence.
“Not every marriage is built on fear, insecurity, and constant monitoring. Some marriages are built on trust, friendship, respect, and confidence,” she wrote.
Mo Bimpe further suggested that the reaction to the clip reflected the kind of relationships some viewers may be accustomed to rather than the reality of her own marriage.
“The fact that so many of you found that interaction strange says more about the relationships you’re used to than it does about mine,” she said.
She maintained that healthy marriages still exist and said her relationship with Lateef was not threatened by a brief interaction with a family friend.
“My husband is a secure man, a brief conversation with a family friend does not threaten our marriage, or require anyone’s concern,” the actress added.
Her response has since drawn further reactions online, with the controversy highlighting the intense scrutiny Nigerian celebrities often face over their personal relationships and public interactions.
