TikToker Jarvis Reveals Painful Childhood: ‘There Were Times We Slept Hungry’

Nigerian TikToker and content creator Elizabeth Amadou, popularly known as Jarvis, has opened up about her difficult childhood, revealing that she grew up without her father, faced challenges at home and experienced periods of severe financial hardship.

Jarvis shared the story on Sunday during a service in the United Kingdom, where she appeared alongside her husband, Peller, and Spark Nation founder Pastor Tobi. A video of her account has since gained attention on social media.

Reflecting on her childhood, Jarvis said she was raised in a difficult family environment and described her mother as living with bipolar disorder. She said her mother’s condition sometimes affected her behaviour towards the family, making her upbringing stressful and emotionally challenging.

Jarvis also revealed that she did not grow up with her father. She said her mother had travelled abroad and returned pregnant with her, leaving her to be raised largely by her grandparents.

“I grew up with my grandma and grandpa. They did their best to raise me up and they are very learned and strict. The strictness made me who I am today,” she said.

Beyond her family circumstances, Jarvis said poverty created additional pressure during her formative years. She recalled periods when her family struggled to pay her school fees and said she was determined to remain in school rather than resort to what she described as the wrong ways of making money.

The content creator said there were also times when she and her sister went without food. She recalled watching cooking videos on TikTok simply because they could not afford the meals being displayed online.

“I and my sister used to watch cooking food videos on TikTok just to salivate and at the end of the day we pray that God help us, cry and sleep because there is hunger,” she recalled.

Jarvis said the financial difficulties eventually pushed her and her sister towards TikTok livestreaming after someone contacted her and told her the platform could provide an opportunity to earn money. She admitted that she was initially shy about appearing online but began going live with her sister.

According to Jarvis, their first earnings from livestreaming were about $5, which she said was a significant moment for them given their circumstances at the time. The sisters subsequently moved into content creation and gradually built an audience.

Jarvis said her motivation throughout the journey was not only to improve her own circumstances but also to support her sister and achieve financial independence. “I wanted to take care of my sister. I want to be able to provide a living for ourselves,” she said.
