FUTO Seeks Police Security Boost After Two Students Abducted, One Person Killed on Campus

The management of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has sought increased police protection around the institution following the abduction of two students and the killing of a bank manager within the university community.

FUTO Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ikechukwu Nosike Dozie, led a management delegation on an emergency visit to the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, to discuss the deteriorating security situation around the institution.

The victim, identified as Mr Ossy Onuoha, was reportedly shot by gunmen while taking his children back to school. The incident has heightened concerns among students, staff and residents over safety within FUTO and surrounding communities.

Imo State Police Command spokesperson Henry Okoye said the meeting focused on security threats affecting FUTO and its environs, as well as wider concerns involving the university community.

Receiving the delegation, CP Bosso acknowledged reports of security challenges around the Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede areas, including kidnapping and cult-related activities. He said the command had intensified security operations in the affected locations.

The commissioner disclosed that he had also met with stakeholders in the Nekede axis on September 3, 2026, to address similar concerns. He stressed that regular engagement with host communities was essential for building trust and obtaining timely information that could help prevent crime.

On the two abducted students, Bosso said police operatives were intensifying efforts to secure their safe rescue and arrest those responsible for the incident. He directed the Area Commander, Owerri; the Divisional Police Officer in Ihiagwa; the Commander of the VCRU; and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to intensify operations.

The commissioner expressed sadness over Onuoha’s death and prayed for the repose of his soul. He also urged students, staff, residents and other stakeholders to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing or responding to criminal activities.

Dozie thanked the police commissioner for receiving the university delegation and called for sustained security support and closer cooperation between FUTO and the command. Bosso assured the university that the police would continue working with its management and host communities to strengthen security around the institution under the Nigeria Police Force’s Safe School Initiative.
