Labour Party Disowns Abayomi Arabambi Over Peter Obi Academic Records Lawsuit

The Labour Party (LP) has distanced itself from Abayomi Arabambi, who recently dragged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to court over the academic records of former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

The party said Arabambi did not institute the case as a member or representative of the Labour Party, stressing that he ceased to be a member months ago.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the LP said it initially chose not to react after learning about the lawsuit on social media because it did not want to give publicity to what it described as an attempt by some individuals to gain attention.

The party said it was, however, compelled to clarify Arabambi’s status after some mainstream media reports described him as a Labour Party chieftain.

According to the LP, its National Executive Council (NEC) suspended 25 members, including Arabambi, on March 18, 2026, over alleged infractions bordering on anti-party activities. The suspension was later ratified by the party’s National Convention on April 28, 2026.

The party maintained that no organ of the LP has reversed or reviewed the decision since then, meaning those affected by the suspension ceased to be members of the party.

The LP therefore warned that any claim by Arabambi that he is acting as a Labour Party chieftain or representative is unauthorised. It said such a representation could amount to impersonation and disclosed that its lawyers are reviewing the matter for possible legal action, including a petition to law enforcement agencies.

The party stressed that its statement was only intended to clarify Arabambi’s relationship with the LP and did not amount to a position on the merits of his case against Peter Obi, who is also no longer a member of the Labour Party.
