Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have ruled out alliances with individuals or opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that their political campaign will remain firmly within the APC structure.
The governors reached the position after their meeting in Abuja on Monday night, with Chairman of the APC Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, saying the forum had not entered into any formal agreement with any individual or opposition party.
The declaration comes amid efforts by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Peoples Democratic Party leader, Nyesom Wike, to build a “Rainbow Coalition” in Rivers State in support of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike, who is part of the APC-led Federal Government despite retaining his PDP membership, has been expanding the coalition initiative while also clashing politically with some APC governors.
During a recent media chat, Wike alleged that Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq were among those behind political challenges facing him.
The APC governors’ latest position appeared to draw a clear line between the party’s official structure and external political movements. Uzodimma said the governors would not support arrangements capable of creating divided loyalty or undermining APC candidates.
Reading the communique after the meeting, Uzodimma said the forum had unanimously resolved that its members would not participate in or endorse any political alliance that could weaken the APC or undermine Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels.”
He said the governors’ campaign efforts would focus exclusively on APC candidates, stressing that those contesting the 2027 elections were being sponsored by the ruling party.
Uzodimma added that the governors would align their campaign structures with Tinubu’s expectations and the strategic objectives of the APC, signalling a coordinated effort by the party’s state-level leadership ahead of the elections.
The declaration could put further pressure on political movements operating outside the APC’s formal structure, particularly as various politicians continue to explore alliances and coalition arrangements ahead of the 2027 contest.
