JAMB Sacks Staff Member Over Alleged Extortion of Candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for allegedly extorting unsuspecting candidates.

The examination body announced the action in its bulletin on Monday, describing it as part of renewed efforts to tackle fraudulent practices within Nigeria’s admission and examination system.

JAMB said the disciplinary measure demonstrated that its campaign against exploitation extends beyond external fraudsters to include employees who abuse their positions or take advantage of candidates.

“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for extorting unsuspecting candidates,” the board said.

The board did not disclose the identity of the staff member or provide details about the alleged extortion. However, it warned employees against actions capable of damaging JAMB’s credibility or exploiting candidates and members of the public.

JAMB said staff found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate sanctions in line with its established regulations. It stressed that no employee would be protected because of their position within the organisation.

The examination body described the dismissal as a clear demonstration of its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and misconduct. It said the policy applies to all employees, regardless of rank or status.

JAMB also urged its staff to uphold the trust placed in them by candidates and the public, warning that anyone found abusing that trust would face disciplinary action. The board said the latest sanction formed part of its broader effort to protect the integrity of the admission and examination process.
