NIMC Debunks Viral Claims of NIN Database Breach

The National Identity Management Commission has dismissed viral reports alleging that Nigeria’s National Identification Number database has been hacked or compromised.

NIMC, in a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, and shared on the commission’s official X handle on Thursday, described the claim as “false and unfounded.”

According to the commission, the video circulating on social media is a recycled report from 2024 which had already been debunked.

“The Commission National Identity Database (NIDB) has not been breached or compromised at any point,” NIMC stated.

The commission said it operates a “robust, multi-layered security infrastructure” designed to safeguard the personal information of registered citizens and legal residents.

NIMC also expressed concern over the spread of unverified information, warning that such reports could mislead members of the public and create unnecessary panic.

It urged Nigerians to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information concerning the National Identity Management System.

The commission further highlighted its NIN Authentication, NINAuth, platform, describing it as a suite of web, API and mobile verification services developed to improve data security and privacy.

NIMC said NINAuth requires the explicit consent of NIN holders before their information can be shared for Know Your Customer processes and other identity verification purposes.

According to the commission, the system allows individuals to verify their identities for services including SIM registration, immigration and passport processing, tax filings and financial transactions without unnecessarily exposing their raw NIN or other personal information.

NIMC said the initiative aligns with provisions of the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 on the lawful, fair and transparent handling of personal data.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents, adding that it would continue to work with relevant security agencies to strengthen its systems and counter misinformation.
