Nigerian Union Demands Probe Into Alleged Killing of 40-Year-Old Nigerian in South Africa

The Nigerian Union in South Africa, NUSA, has called for a thorough investigation into the alleged killing of a 40-year-old Nigerian, Olatunde Olaleye, in Pretoria, South Africa.

Olaleye, an indigene of Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti State, was reportedly shot dead on September 21 while working at Spanata Bar and Grills in Mamelodi, Pretoria.

NUSA President-General, Smart Nwobi, disclosed the incident in a statement on Thursday, describing Olaleye as a husband and father of two whose death had left his family and members of the Nigerian community devastated.

Nwobi said the union was particularly concerned by reports that Olaleye was allegedly shot by a South African national following an argument over whether a drinking glass could be taken outside the bar.

He added that reports indicated that the alleged suspect later returned to the premises and threatened the management, reportedly warning that members of his crew would come back.

NUSA called for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding Olaleye’s death and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the law.

“We cannot continue to lose Nigerians under circumstances that leave families devastated and communities traumatised,” Nwobi said.

“We call for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Olaleye’s death and for the law to take its proper course.”

The union also urged the Nigerian Mission in South Africa, including the Consulate-General’s Office and the High Commission in Pretoria, to intensify discussions with South African authorities over the incident.

Nwobi asked the mission to use all available diplomatic channels to pursue the matter and strengthen measures aimed at protecting Nigerians living in South Africa.

The NUSA president expressed solidarity with Olaleye’s wife, his two children and the wider Nigerian community, while calling for justice and accountability in the case.
