‘Black Market’ Sets Guinness World Record With 51,258 Viewers in Lagos

Nigerian crime thriller Black Market has set a new Guinness World Records title for the largest attendance at a film screening, drawing 51,258 verified viewers to its Lagos screening.

The record-breaking event took place on September 26 at Tafawa Balewa Square, where Guinness World Records confirmed that 51,258 people remained from the beginning to the end of the film.

The attendance surpassed the previous record of 43,624 viewers, set in the Philippines in 2015.

Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, Black Market features a cast including Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Lateef Adedimeji, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez and Uzor Arukwe.

The film follows five women involved in a cross-border smuggling operation, whose lives are thrown into turmoil after one of them suffers a devastating loss.

The record-breaking screening has placed fresh attention on Nigeria’s growing creative industry and demonstrated the ability of local filmmakers to stage large-scale entertainment events.

The achievement also adds another Guinness World Records milestone to Nigeria’s growing list of records in entertainment and creative culture.
