Western Ports Police Halt Port-Corridor Ticket Dispute Between COMTUA and LASTCOC

The Western Ports Police Command has intervened in a dispute between the Committee of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations (COMTUA) and the Lagos State Trucks and Cargo Operators Committee (LASTCOC) over proposed revenue ticket sales along the Apapa and Tin Can Island port corridors.
The intervention followed a petition from COMTUA, which objected to what it described as plans for illegal revenue collection on the busy port access roads.
To prevent the dispute from escalating into a breakdown of law and order, the Commissioner of Police, Western Ports Command, convened a peace meeting between representatives of both groups at the command headquarters.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Commissioners of Police in charge of Operations and Administration, alongside the Area Commander for Tin Can Island and Divisional Police Officers from Apapa, RORO and Tin Can Island. Other senior officers of the Ports Authority Police Command were also present.
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) was represented by its Principal Security Officers for the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports.
In a statement issued by COMTUA National President Yinka Aroyewun, the two sides agreed to maintain peace and avoid actions capable of disrupting security, traffic and port activities along the corridors.
The police commissioner urged both parties to respect the resolutions reached at the meeting, stressing that maintaining peace was necessary for the smooth movement of traffic and uninterrupted port operations.
The resolution stated that neither party should conduct committee or union activities, including revenue collection or ticket sales, on the port access corridors. The police command also reaffirmed that revenue collection and ticket sales on the access roads were illegal and would not be permitted.
COMTUA welcomed the intervention, with Aroyewun commending the Western Ports Police Command for what he described as a timely and constructive role in resolving the dispute.
“We, in COMTUA, commend the Western Ports Police Command for its timely intervention and fatherly role,” the statement said. The union also urged truckers to continue their lawful activities without fear of harassment or illegal ticket collection.
