Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on Ndigbo and all Nigerians to remain committed to unity, peaceful coexistence and national development as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

The organisation made the call in an Independence Day statement issued by its Global Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, who extended greetings to Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora as well as Nigerians across the country.

Chukwu said the anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s shared history, common aspirations and the collective responsibility of citizens to contribute to the peace, stability and development of the nation.

He said Ndigbo had continued to demonstrate resilience, enterprise and commitment to the advancement of their communities and Nigeria. He also referenced the message of Ohanaeze President-General, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, who has urged Ndigbo to look beyond political, religious and strategic differences.

“We may disagree on politics, we may disagree on religion, we may disagree on strategy… but beneath these differences is a shared identity and a shared responsibility for our common good,” Mbata said.

Ohanaeze urged Ndigbo to draw strength from their unity, preserve their heritage and work collectively with hope, wisdom and a sense of responsibility. The organisation said its vision remained centred on a Nigeria where justice, equity, fairness and equal opportunity guide national life.

It also called for a country where citizens, regardless of their origin or circumstances, can enjoy a genuine sense of belonging and have opportunities to fulfil their potential. The group said achieving such a society would require continued commitment to peaceful coexistence and national development.

The statement further urged Ndigbo to contribute to building a future where Nigerians can live with dignity, opportunity, hope and fulfilled aspirations. The organisation concluded by wishing Ndigbo and all Nigerians a peaceful and meaningful Independence Day celebration.
