The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly vandalising a telecommunications mast and stealing equipment belonging to a service provider.
The suspect, identified as Nweke Wisdom from Izzi South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was arrested on Thursday at Esther Obiakor Estate, Agu-Awka, following a distress call about a suspected vandal at the mast.
The NSCDC said the suspect was apprehended at about 7:20 a.m. and taken to the command’s state headquarters in Awka for further investigation.
According to the command’s Head of Media and Tactical Operations, Edwin Okadigbo, items believed to have been removed from the mast installation were recovered from the suspect during the arrest.
The recovered materials included DC cable and armoured cable, which the command said were among the equipment allegedly taken from the telecommunications facility.
Okadigbo said preliminary investigations indicated that Wisdom allegedly specialised in vandalising telecommunications masts and removing valuable equipment from the installations.
The command added that the suspect had made what it described as useful confessions during preliminary questioning. He is expected to be charged to court after the completion of the investigation.
The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure across Anambra State, warning individuals involved in vandalism and theft to desist from such activities.
The command also urged residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains important in protecting telecommunications infrastructure and improving security across the state.
