Abia Skull Controversy: Umunneochi LGA Challenges Police Account

A controversy has emerged in Abia State following conflicting accounts over the reported recovery of 28 human skulls and other human remains from a suspected criminal hideout in Umunneochi Local Government Area.

The Abia State Police Command said its tactical teams recovered the remains during an intelligence-led operation around Umuaku-Isuochi and Nneato areas of the state.

According to the police, the recovered skulls and bones were suspected to belong to victims of kidnapping, while occupants of the alleged criminal camps reportedly fled before security operatives arrived.

The command said investigations were ongoing to identify the remains and determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

However, the Umunneochi Local Government Administration has challenged the impression created by the police account and subsequent reports, particularly the suggestion that the site represented a fresh discovery.

The council said the location was an abandoned suspected kidnappers’ camp that had been discovered around August 2024.

According to the council, the site is situated near the boundary between Aku in Imo State and Nneato in Umunneochi Local Government Area.

The local government also said a video currently circulating online was recorded during security operations on September 26, 2026, but maintained that the location itself was not newly discovered.

The council consequently urged residents to remain calm and avoid assuming that a fresh discovery of 28 human skulls had just been made in Isuochi.

The conflicting accounts have raised questions over when the remains were discovered and the circumstances surrounding their recovery.

Further clarification is expected as the police investigation continues, particularly on the identities of the remains and when they were first discovered.

Until the investigation is concluded, the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the identities of the deceased remain unestablished.
