Anambra Govt Tells Voters to Resist Peter Obi, Accuses Him of Trying to Destroy APGA

The Anambra State Government has urged voters to reject New Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2027 general election, accusing the former governor of working against the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The government made the call in a post published on Monday by the official X account managed by the New Media office of Governor Chukwuma Soludo. It described the message as a “betrayal alert” to APGA supporters and urged them to defend the party at the polls.

The state government alleged that Obi had sought to undermine APGA since leaving the party, while claiming that President Bola Tinubu had supported the party. It urged APGA members not to support Obi or the NDC in the 2027 presidential election.

Obi served as Anambra governor from 2006 to 2014 and formally left APGA in October 2014 to join the Peoples Democratic Party. He later moved to the Labour Party before joining the African Democratic Congress and subsequently the NDC as part of the political realignment ahead of the 2027 election.

The dispute comes amid a wider political disagreement between Obi and the Soludo administration over external financing linked to projects implemented during Obi’s tenure. The Anambra government has said eight external facilities associated with projects during his administration had a combined contracted value of $123.77 million, with $92.35 million outstanding as of June 2026.

Obi has rejected the description of the entire $123.77 million as debt he left behind. He argued that the facilities were primarily World Bank and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) development programmes negotiated through the Federal Government and accessed by participating states through subsidiary arrangements. He said the approved amount, actual drawdowns and outstanding balance at the time he left office should be treated separately.

The former governor also maintained that he did not personally approach any financial institution to borrow money or issue a bond on behalf of Anambra. The state government, however, has continued to challenge his account of the facilities and has separately raised questions about other financial matters inherited from his administration.

The latest political confrontation also follows APGA’s decision in July to endorse President Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election. The party said its National Executive Committee reached the decision after consultations and explained that it would not field a presidential candidate of its own.

The Anambra government’s latest statement further deepens the political contest between Obi and his former political base as the 2027 election approaches. As of the latest reports, Obi had not publicly responded to the specific “betrayal” allegation made by the state government.
