The Osun State Amotekun Corps has handed four of its operatives to the state police command to assist investigations into the killing of Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as ‘Emir’, at a motor park in Ile-Ife.
The Corps made the clarification on Monday following reports circulating on social media that the police had arrested some of its personnel over Oyeyemi’s death.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu, the Corps said the operatives were not arrested by the police but were voluntarily handed over to investigators by its commander, Adekunle Isaac Omoyele.
Oyeyemi, a chieftain of the Accord Party, was killed during a clash at Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife on Sunday, September 13. The incident prompted Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to order an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Oyeyemi was reportedly being considered for appointment as chairman of the Park Management System, which the state government planned to establish to replace the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the management of public motor parks.
According to the Amotekun Corps, the four operatives were attached to NURTW chieftain Alowonle Nurudeen. Omoyele handed them over to the police to support a thorough investigation into the attacks and help establish what happened.
The Corps urged the public and media organisations not to describe the development as an arrest, stressing that the operatives were made available to the police as part of the investigative process.
It said the distinction was important because the investigation had not been concluded and the circumstances surrounding the operatives had yet to be established.
Amotekun also reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, discipline and accountability, saying it would cooperate with other security agencies to ensure that the investigation is properly conducted.
The Corps added that it would not tolerate indiscipline or actions capable of undermining public confidence in Osun State’s security system.
