The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Global Executive Committee has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to open a structured political dialogue with the South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The pan-Igbo organisation said Ndigbo should not be expected to enter another election cycle based on political promises or assumptions, insisting that the Federal Government must clearly state what it is prepared to offer the region.
The demand was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the organisation’s factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Acting Secretary-General, Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa.
Ohanaeze said the South-East had legitimate political, economic, infrastructural and constitutional concerns that required clear responses from the Federal Government. It described the proposed engagement not as a request for political favour, but as a demand for transparency, accountability and a mutually beneficial relationship.
Among the issues the group wants addressed are equitable political representation, the creation of an additional state in the South-East, rail connectivity, maritime development, economic integration and national reconciliation.
The organisation said political engagement would only be meaningful if both the government and Ndigbo understood what was being requested, what was being offered and what could realistically be delivered before the 2027 elections.
On state creation, Ohanaeze specifically called on the Federal Government to clarify whether it supports the creation of another state in the South-East, describing equitable political and administrative representation as a legitimate national issue that should remain part of the constitutional debate.
The group maintained that the South-East deserved a clear understanding of its political and developmental prospects within the Nigerian federation before the next electoral cycle. It therefore urged the Tinubu administration to begin discussions with Ndigbo and provide concrete positions on the issues it considers central to the region’s future.
