Former Manchester United and France defender Patrice Evra has announced the death of his mother, Juliette, following her battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Evra shared the news in an emotional video on social media, where he paid tribute to his mother while singing “Avant qu’elle parte” by French hip-hop group Sexion d’Assaut.
The 45-year-old struggled to contain his emotions as he spoke about the loss of the woman he described as his “rock”.
“I lost my rock, but I’m trying to stay positive,” Evra said, urging people who still have their mothers to tell them they love them every day.
He also shared a touching written tribute to Juliette, describing a mother’s love as something that lasts forever.
“Even when the whole world is against you, she will always be your best friend,” Evra wrote. “A mother’s love is forever, no matter what happens in life.”
Evra had previously spoken publicly about his mother’s health challenges and the major influence she had on his life.
One of the most personal tributes came through his social media videos, where he sometimes appeared wearing only one shoe. He explained that the gesture was dedicated to his mother after she lost her left leg following a medical emergency in 2010.
Evra recalled being with the France national team when he received news that his mother had been rushed to hospital. After receiving permission to leave, he travelled to see her and discovered that she had lost her leg.
He later explained that leaving one shoe off in his videos became a way of keeping her memory close and honouring what she meant to him.
“Every time I do a video, I just dedicate it to my hero, my mum,” Evra said.
Evra’s latest tribute has prompted an outpouring of sympathy as the former defender mourns a woman whose influence remained central to his life long after his celebrated football career.
