A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel in Edo State, with police arresting three people in connection with the incident.
Uwuigbe reportedly died on Sunday after checking into a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying the lecturer had allegedly engaged the services of the woman before his death.
Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the command received a report at about 8pm on October 5, 2026, concerning Uwuigbe’s death at the hotel.
According to Ikoedem, Uwuigbe had sent the woman to buy water. When she returned, she reportedly found him lying dead inside the hotel room.
The police said the hotel owner, manager and the 21-year-old woman are currently in custody as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
Uwuigbe’s body has been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary, according to the police.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of the institution’s staff but stressed that the incident happened outside the university premises. He also said the woman involved was not an AAU student.
The cause of Uwuigbe’s death has not been officially established, and the police investigation remains ongoing. The arrests do not establish criminal responsibility, and those in custody are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court.
