Spanish football star Pedro Rodríguez has announced his retirement from professional football, ending a career that brought him major honours with Barcelona, Chelsea and the Spain national team.
The former Barcelona forward announced his decision in an emotional message shared on his X account on Wednesday, saying he believes the time has come to begin a new chapter of his life.
“I feel that the time has come. The time to take a step forward and begin a new stage in my life,” Pedro said.
The 37-year-old said he was proud to have fulfilled the dream he had as a child and expressed gratitude to the people who supported him throughout his career.
“I leave proud of having lived my dream and of all the people who were by my side to make it come true,” he added.
Pedro also thanked football for the happiness and memories the sport gave him during his playing career.
“Thank you, soccer, for making me so happy,” he said.
Pedro began his senior career at Barcelona after progressing through the club’s youth system. He became an important part of Pep Guardiola’s highly successful side and won several domestic and European trophies during his time at Camp Nou.
He left Barcelona for Chelsea in 2015 and continued his success in England, helping the London club win major silverware. The forward later played in Italy for Roma and Lazio before bringing his professional career to a close.
At international level, Pedro was part of one of Spain’s most successful generations. He represented La Roja at major tournaments and won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012.
His retirement marks the end of more than 15 years of top-level professional football, during which he lifted major trophies in Spain, England and Italy and earned recognition as one of the most accomplished Spanish forwards of his generation.
