More than 200 members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Adamawa State have defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The defectors announced their decision while the SDP unveiled Dr Fauziyah Ahmed Rufai as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Mustapha Abbo said they joined the SDP because of the governorship candidate Christopher Nathaniel’s plans for the development of Adamawa State.
The new SDP members also pledged their support for Nathaniel as the party prepares for the governorship contest.
Nathaniel, while speaking at the event, said Rufai was selected after careful consideration of her experience and capacity to contribute to the development of the state.
He described her emergence as a significant step for the party, noting that it places a woman in a prominent position on the SDP governorship ticket.
“Her emergence also places a woman in a prominent position on the SDP governorship ticket,” Nathaniel said.
The SDP candidate said the party would continue to promote unity and focus its campaign on issues as it mobilises support across Adamawa.
He added that the gathering provided an opportunity for party stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to unity and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 election.
The defection adds to the political realignments taking place in Adamawa as parties begin preparations for the 2027 governorship contest.
