Lionel Messi has explained why he does not want the legacy of late Argentina football legend Diego Maradona to be forgotten.

Messi said Maradona played a major role in placing Argentina on the global football map and deserved to remain remembered by future generations.

The Inter Miami forward made the remarks after featuring in what was described as his final match for Argentina, a 3-0 friendly victory over Benin Republic.

“I don’t want to forget Diego, who put our country where it deserved to be,” Messi said.

The Argentina captain also acknowledged Maradona’s influence on the national team, saying he believed the late football icon continued to inspire the country even after his death.

“I know he helped us when he was here with us and also from heaven, every step of the way,” Messi said.

Maradona remains one of Argentina’s most celebrated football figures after leading the country to victory at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

He later coached the Argentina national team before his death on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60.

Messi and Maradona shared a strong connection through Argentina football, with Maradona having coached Messi and the national team during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Messi’s latest tribute comes as he reflects on his own international career and the legacy of those who helped shape Argentina’s football history.
