Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has criticised the rising cost of living and persistent insecurity in Nigeria, promising to make life more affordable and restore security if elected president.
Atiku made the pledge in a post on his official X account on Wednesday, where he urged registered voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former vice president said Nigerians across different age groups were struggling with economic hardship, rising living expenses and growing concerns about their safety.
“My fellow Nigerians, young and old, I know the pain you are carrying,” Atiku wrote.
He described the difficulties facing households, saying many parents were worried about providing food for their children, while pensioners faced difficult choices between buying food and purchasing medicines.
Atiku also highlighted the financial pressures on young Nigerians, arguing that workers were finding it increasingly difficult to cover basic expenses despite earning a salary.
“Young people work hard, yet transport, rent and basic needs consume what they earn,” he said.
On security, the ADC candidate expressed concern about kidnappings and attacks across the country, saying many families lived with uncertainty over the safety of their loved ones.
“And across the country, families live with the fear of kidnapping, attacks and whether their loved ones will return home safely,” he added.
Atiku said Nigerians should not have to endure hunger and insecurity simultaneously. He warned against allowing the country’s current difficulties to shape the future of younger generations.
“No family should have to face hunger and insecurity at the same time. We cannot allow this hardship and fear to become the future our children inherit,” he stated.
The former vice president urged eligible voters to collect and safeguard their PVCs, describing voting as a peaceful means of demanding change through the democratic process.
“If you are a registered voter, please go and collect your PVC. Hold on to it. It is your voice, your choice and your peaceful power to demand change,” he said.
Atiku also blamed President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the rising cost of living and pledged to reverse the trend if elected.
“Bola made life expensive. I will work to make life affordable again and restore the security every Nigerian deserves,” he said.
He called on Nigerians across generations to unite behind his vision of a country where families could live with dignity, safety and hope.
