Former AC Milan goalkeeping coach Luigi Turci has warned Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye that his position as Udinese’s first-choice goalkeeper is not guaranteed, insisting that he must improve his performances to retain the role.
Okoye has come under scrutiny following a difficult start to the campaign, conceding 13 goals in Udinese’s first six matches. The Nigerian goalkeeper also faced criticism from head coach Kosta Runjaic after a costly mistake contributed to the team’s defeat to Torino on Monday.
The incident occurred when Okoye came off his line to deal with a long pass but collided with teammate Nicolo Bertola. Torino forward Sandro Kulenović took advantage of the defensive mix-up to score the decisive goal.
Despite the error, Turci believes Okoye should not automatically lose his place as punishment for one mistake. Speaking to Italian newspaper Messaggero Veneto, the former goalkeeping coach argued that confidence remains essential for a goalkeeper, particularly after a difficult performance.
Turci backed Okoye to start Udinese’s upcoming Serie A fixture against Lecce, provided he can remain composed. He added that goalkeeping coaches Brunner and Marcon would be in a position to assess the Nigerian’s mental state and readiness for the match.
However, Turci stressed that the support given to Okoye cannot continue indefinitely without improved performances. He warned that a goalkeeper must consistently demonstrate reliability, noting that a club can eventually turn to another option if the incumbent fails to deliver.
Okoye joined Udinese from Watford in August 2023 and is contracted to the Italian club until June 30, 2028. The 26-year-old will now be under pressure to respond to the recent criticism and strengthen his claim to the starting position.
