The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has mourned former Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, describing him as a dear elder brother with whom he shared a cordial relationship during their time in public service.

Obi expressed his grief in a condolence message posted on his X handle on Tuesday, recalling their collaboration in advocating for the award of the contract for the Second Niger Bridge.

The former Anambra State governor said Uduaghan treated him like a younger brother during their interactions and described their relationship as one built on mutual respect and cooperation.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my very dear elder brother, His Excellency, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, former Governor of Delta State. In my interactions with him, he treated me like his junior brother,” Obi wrote.

He recalled that both men worked together while holding public office, particularly in efforts to advance the Second Niger Bridge project, which he described as important to national integration, commerce and regional development.

According to Obi, their collaboration focused on promoting the project and advocating for the award of the construction contract, with particular benefits expected for communities in the South-East and South-South regions.

He expressed satisfaction that their collective efforts eventually yielded results, with the bridge becoming a reality.

“I am pleased that the effort ultimately succeeded and that the Second Niger Bridge became a reality, serving as a symbol of the importance of collaboration in the pursuit of national development,” he said.

Obi described Uduaghan’s death as a significant loss to his family, the people of Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.

He extended his condolences to the former governor’s family, the Delta State Government and residents of the state, while praying for God to grant the deceased eternal rest and comfort those mourning his passing.

Uduaghan served as governor of Delta State from 2007 to 2015. His death has prompted tributes from political figures and others reflecting on his time in public service.
