Rangers International technical adviser Fidelis Ilechukwu has urged his players to remain focused despite securing a 2-0 victory over MC Alger in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie.
The Flying Antelopes defeated the Algerian side at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta on Sunday, giving the Nigerian club an advantage ahead of Friday’s return leg in Algiers.
Despite the two-goal lead, Ilechukwu warned that Rangers must not become complacent, stressing the importance of approaching the away fixture with the right mentality and collective commitment.
“We need to put the result behind us and go to the away game and attack and defend as a group,” Ilechukwu told 54footballx.
The Rangers coach also emphasised the need for early preparation, saying travelling ahead of the encounter would give the team sufficient time to adjust to the conditions in Algeria.
“We have to have a good preparation ahead of the game with early travel which is going to be at an advantage for us most especially for adaptation,” he said.
Rangers will need to maintain their concentration and defensive organisation while looking for opportunities to score in the second leg. Ilechukwu’s comments underline the team’s determination to approach the decisive fixture as a collective unit rather than rely solely on its first-leg advantage.
The winner of the two-legged tie will progress to the group stage of the CAF Champions League, making Friday’s encounter crucial for both sides.
